Poetry Fosters Healing for Human Trafficking Survivors
Jennifer Jean, a published poet, educator and New England native, has been using her gifts to give back in a big way. Jennifer has been inspired to raise awareness on the issue of human trafficking, what she calls modern-day slavery. “I see this work as directly addressing the most extreme manifestation of the Fall in contemporary society,” she said.
Last winter Jennifer partnered with Amirah safe house, a non-profit organization located in the Boston area whose mission is to provide “transformative whole-person care for survivors of commercial exploitation as we engage, educate and mobilize our communities and partners to respond to human trafficking.” She ran a successful poetry workshop there for trafficking survivors as a way to promote healing through the creative arts. “I worked on the assumption that healing takes place through the use of imagination as well as creative expression,” she said.
The class was so successful that the residents are eager for more. Currently Jennifer is raising funds in order to be able to continue this transformative work.
