Creating Social Change With Mother of Peace

A Unificationist couple, inspired by the recent memoir of Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, known as the Mother of Peace, created an online petition calling for all women in America to bring peace to their communities. Stephen and Hisae Child of Reno, Nevada, said the petition aims to unite mothers, sisters, and daughters through Mother Moon’s heart and galvanize action among all people, expressing that it is necessary to forgive, love, and unite to bring world peace.
“I love America as an immigrant from Japan and am so hurt to see all the fighting and rioting and killing in our communities,” says Hisae’s introduction on the petition page. “This country has been guided by God and many people’s sacrifice…We have to protect America and once more trust in God. The Mother of Peace is telling us that God is now calling on all women to ‘serve as the mediators of forgiving, purifying, and regenerating grace’…Like any good family, we should work hard and actively to live together in one harmonious community beyond race, nation, and ideology.”
The petition echoes the words of both Mother Moon and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., stating that social progress is not achieved through conflict. More than 500 people have already supported the cause, with a goal of 1,000 signatures. “We were really inspired to be more active during the Chosen workshop earlier this year, and we know that God needs everyone’s faith and love to bring peace to the world,” said Stephen Child during a recent online pastors’ meeting among Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) USA leaders.
The couple also set up a shaded stand outside their housing enclave—with social distancing and sanitizing guidelines in place—where they share Dr. Moon’s recently published memoir. “We want to share Mother Moon’s face, memoir, and teachings as much as possible,” said Stephen. “We have had so many people stop by our table and we talk with them about the Mother of Peace. Everyone just pours their heart out; they are worried about America and don’t know what to do.”

Dr. Moon, who co-founded FFWPU alongside her late husband Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, has been tirelessly working toward global peace for more than six decades. Growing up in war-torn North Korea, she has launched numerous peacebuilding initiatives worldwide, including an international movement transcending racial, religious, and ideological boundaries. Her memoir shares an intimate look at her life’s journey. “We have a big 8×4 poster next to our stand that advertises Mother Moon’s book,” said Stephen. “We want people to ask about her and learn more about her.”
The petition and book stand has inspired many community members to share about the Mother of Peace in creative ways. “We are very proud of the Childs; they always put their whole heart into everything they do,” said Rev. Larry Krishnek, FFWPU-USA northwest regional director. “They have so much heart and investment for God and Mother Moon.”
