One “Ohana” Under God
On Sunday, June 9, the Honolulu Family Church hosted its third annual Hyojeong Ohana Undoukai (Family Sports Festival) at the Paki Community Park, located next to the Honolulu Zoo in Waikiki. Over 80 community members participated in games and fun activities, with the iconic silhouette of Diamond Head State Monument in the background.
Originally initiated by Hitoshi and Linda Nagai in 2017, Undoukai has become a wonderful annual tradition for the Honolulu community. Participants of all ages can experience “One ‘Ohana’ under God” through sports and games.
This year’s program was planned and executed almost entirely by young Unificationists. Kotone Narifusa and Motomi Otsubo, emcees for the program, maintained a joyful atmosphere throughout the day. Young Kwon Hirata, one of the Honolulu Youth Ministry team leaders, took initiatives to coordinate the event with several other volunteers. Together they divided Undoukai participants into three teams, Pink, Yellow and Green. Each team created a flag and chose a mascot.
In the Sunday Service before the Undoukai, Rev. Kazuo Takami, Hawaii District Pastor, explained the reasoning behind adding Hyojeong to the event title. He described Hyojeong as “human’s heart of filial piety in response to God’s love.”
