Service Snapshots: Collecting Donations … of Fruit
GPA teams are traveling and providing service work in Barbados, Panama, Trinidad, the Dominican Republic, and Peru. They are currently participating in a service project in the Dominican Republic.
Generation Peace Academy put a new spin on an old classic when they went out on the streets of Peru to collect fruit donations. Putting to work their experience gained raising funds for GPA in the United States and armed with a Spanish donation pitch on a piece of paper, the team gathered donations of fruit from vendors and customers at a nearby food market to connect with the community they were serving overseas. After an hour they had collected fruits of all different kinds, some of which they had “never seen!”
The teams then brought the food to a senior center in Lima, the capital of Peru, to connect with the local senior citizens. In true GPA fashion they provided not only dinner but also a show! The participants performed songs, danced, and even rapped for the seniors. Undoubtedly the experience is one that neither side will forget any time soon. “Yes, we sang and danced,” one participant said, “but more than that, our presence there made the most impact.”
