How We Can Teach Hyojeong
In the following testimony, Mrs. Marjorie Buessing reflects on how to teach hyojeong, or the heart of filial piety, through her experience watching the Washington, D.C. Family Church Children’s Choir perform at the 40th anniversary celebration of the dedication of the first national Unificationist church building.
At the D.C. church on Sunday, I experienced the hyojeong culture of heart in the loving offering the children of the D.C. Children’s Choir made to our True Parents. They gave introductory words and performed two beautiful songs all in Korean, dedicating their performance to True Mother.
Struck by the pureness of the children’s heart for True Parents, my friend Dr. Douglas D.M. Joo, Chairman of the International Conference for the Unity of the Sciences (ICUS), asked me, “How do you think we teach hyojeong?”
As I pondered his question, I realized, “You can’t teach it through lectures or reading. You must have it, and then you can only teach it by example.”
Ndassi Babatunde, a Unificationist in the D.C. community, has it and the children are inheriting it. When the program had ended and we were all enjoying being together, I had a chance to talk with her. She shared that all the women of the church pray for each and every child by name each day—and there are 120 children in the choir!
At first, they were just names to her. Now, each name has a face, a personality, a family. Now they are a family—a family of brothers and sisters, younger and older, aunts and uncles. Now they are one family that is taking responsibility to support one other with love, prayer, and a filial heart for True Parents.
