Shine City Project Expands Environmental Efforts
The Shine City Project, started in 2013 by the Las Vegas Family Church, is a volunteer service group that hits the streets of Las Vegas nearly every weekend to clean up roads and parks, support recycling and composting efforts and recruit team members at local universities. This month, in addition to their street cleanup project, they expanded their efforts to include much-needed environmental work.
On the morning of Friday, October 16, 2015, members of the Shine City Project cleaned up the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Windmill Lane. Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP) members, University of Las Vegas (UNLV) students and visiting Japanese Unificationist missionaries filled 12 bags of trash in one hour. The following morning, Shine City Project went to Pittman Wash in Henderson to remove invasive plant species and plant native trees in the area. Tamarisk trees and fountain grass are invasive, while the desert willow tree are native. Rain or shine, Shine City Project works hard to keep Las Vegas shining!
