Bullying Awareness and Prevention Workshop

Seventy people gathered at the International Peace Education Center early in the evening of Friday, August 21, 2015 at a workshop sponsored by the Family Education and Empowerment Foundation (FEEF) to hear two Clark County School District (CCSD) representatives speak on the topic of Bullying and Cyberbullying. Their core message emphasized family as being the school of love, and Mr. Rodney Lee and Ms. Hildanies Colon, coordinators of the Department of Equity and Diversity Education, provided everyone with the meaning of the terms bullying and cyberbullying, a review of the district’s Behavior Guidelines and some quick tips on how to report and document incidents. Tips were also given to parents on how to talk to their children about this issue and what behavior to encourage them with when being bullied.
One student representative shared with the audience a moving, first-hand experience of being bullied and how she was able to overcome the negative experience with her parents’ love and guidance. Mr. Ken Minster, representing Congressman Joe Heck’s office, also shared a few words of support for what FEEF is doing to reach out and educate youths and families.
Mrs. Morse concluded the evening with the following thoughts:
“It is important to have an open communication with the children, to listen carefully and talk openly about the day. Through this daily open communication, as parents we should be able to detect stress, concern, fear, pain and changes in behavior or attitudes. We should not smother the child in protection, but encourage them to be open and through the openness help them to see the problem and devise ways to overcome whatever issues they are facing. Developing open communication is a two-way street and must be done consistently on a regular, daily basis during a family quiet time with no interruptions of work, TV, internet, cell phones, iPads, iPods, etc. The family is the school of love.”
