For Your Heart Does Love Me

By Yojin Higashibaba (USA)

In the deepest core of my knowing heart

A song has been written by thee.

The time it began, the time it did start,

Is in eternity.

And it grows and expands like light in the dark

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

In the sweetest nectar of my childhood days

I smiled at the picture of thee.

I prayed and bowed in the morning haze

To my Oma and Aboji.

You were my heroes, you stood by side,

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

In these softest times I played with you

In flowers beneath gentle trees.

And I smiled because the sky was so blue

‘gainst the smooth and glassy sea.

And we shared the joy and heart of a child

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

Then in my glass orb you showed me a crack,

A window where I could see.

You offered your hand, there’s no turning back,

You must see for the world to be free.

And I took your hand, and I trusted your words,

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

The glass came shattering down on the grass,

The winds did rip at the sea,

The coldness came so close and so fast

When I saw reality.

I screamed for help, and our hands were clasped,

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

The murk of hell lapsed at my throat,

The thorns did tear at my feet.

I felt myself drowning, I said, “Let me go!

I do not want to be free.”

And softly my hands did slip from yours,

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

The earth was wild, striped white and black,

And all the shades in between,

I could not go forward, I could not go back

This happens once you see.

And I sat in limbo with your name on my lips

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

In the deepest sorrow, when there was no air,

I cried and I reached for thee.

In the deepest silence, you held my despair

And lit a candle so I could breathe.

You told me that you would always be there,

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

Then I heard a song so sweet and so fair,

And I was its harmony.

You sang, “You’re a bird and I the air,

You’re the sand and I the sea.

You are worthy, I sing, my precious dear,

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

“And look, my child, with thine own eyes

For the light’s etched in darkness you see.

Love is not only a gem or a prize

But a mother’s life for her baby.”

And then I knew, you’d risked your life for mine,

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

I looked again at the flowers in bloom,

I looked at the gentle sea.

I saw the storm on the horizon come

And remembered what you had taught me.

And I felt the courage beat in my heart,

For I love you, and your heart does love me.

When you shine your light, it lights up the dark,

And soon the wicked you’ll see.

If you love it fully with all of your heart

I’ll give you the Crown of Glory,

Then the black darkness will turn into light,

For I love you and your heart does love me.

I saw the flame that grew from a spark,

My heart had to break to Be.

I saw sweet Grace on the wings of a lark,

And I knew the world was set free.

And God saved Her children forevermore,

For I love you, and your heart does love me.
