New Family Devotional Series Aims to Get Teens Talking

Do you have trouble getting through to your teenager? Hannah Hunter, a young Unificationist working with the National Youth Ministry, knows firsthand just how difficult it can be to get youth to open up. With families in mind, she has launched a new series of readings designed to encourage openness and understanding between parents and their emerging adult children.

Many Unificationist families already choose to read and discuss daily devotionals. This tradition, known by the Korean term Hoon Dok Hwe (HDH), can be a challenge when youth are resistant to opening up. Hunter’s series, dubbed the School of Love Family HDH Series, is designed to help parents and teens jump hurdles that prevent vulnerability and closeness. The questions start out easy, and get more in-depth as the session goes on.

In the first devotional, published in January, you will find questions that get at the heart of what teens believe about God and truth. Hunter warns parents to be patient with the process and not expect too much right at the beginning. “Some teens may share deeply, and some may offer one or two word answers,” warns Hunter. “The most important thing is to approach this time with sincerity and openness and to understand and celebrate what each person chooses to share.”
