Chicago Unificationists Raise Money for Veterans

The Sutchar family in Chicago
The Sutchar family, a Unificationist family in Chicago, participated in their third annual run to end homelessness for veterans. Sponsored by A Safe Haven, a non-profit Chicago organization, their group, Team Patlak, sponsored by Cook County Commissioner of the Board of Review, raised the most money and brought the most participants. Over 500 runners, and infinitely more walkers and supporters, showed up to support and participate in the event.

Bruce Sutchar became involved in the annual 5K run about three years ago, inspired by the organization’s simple mission to provide housing for returning veterans. For the past five years, A Safe Haven has served the veterans community by sponsoring a 5K run to raise money and awareness.

Bruce Sutchar and a 5K participant
Bruce was inspired by his previous volunteer work, which included the Washington Times Century Awards, an event that honored groups nationwide who were serving their communities. In meeting all these volunteer groups, he was moved and inspired. His biggest influence, though, has been his own children and spouse, who he says are “immersed in so many things” and volunteer on a regular basis despite being busy with so many other activities. His two daughters and his wife have participated in past races, even placing within their age category.

Bruce’s daughters participate in the run.
Bruce says he wants to make people aware of the many issues veterans face upon returning home, and to encourage others to follow True Father’s direction to “serve humankind with shoes of the servant and the heart of the Father.”

Phenomenal. Thank you. Do you help vets who have been home and are experiencing PTSD and other problems?
