Apply to the Sunhak Institute of Korean Studies
The Sunhak Institute of Korean Studies—better known a GOP—is now accepting 2019-2020 semester applications. Students 12- to 15-years-old can participate in the General Orientation Program (GOP) for international students.
Mr. Olaleye Isaiah Alao and his wife, Mrs. Takako Alao have been the international dormitory parents for GOP since 2015. Mrs. Takako has experience as a teacher and counselor. They are doing their best to take great care of young Unificationists in the program, guiding them well in developing their life of faith, and providing a warm and stable dormitory life.
True Parents initiated the 10-month General Orientation Program in 1982, with the aim of encouraging students from around the world to learn the Korean language, Korean culture and the Unificationist way of life. Young Unificationists live and study together with their peers from around the world, which allows them to broaden their perspectives not only by encountering different cultures and languages, but also by learning to live harmoniously with different personality types. They practice a life of faith, with daily Hoon Dok Hwe and evening closing sessions, daily reflections, weekly attendance at Sunday Service, and participation in major church events. Everyone who comes to GOP learns Korean, but also grows in heart and spirit.
At the end of 2014, True Mother assigned a new Principal, Prof. Yeon-Ah Moon, wife of Hyo-Jin Moon (1962-2008) and President of Universal Peace Federation (UPF) Korea and Chairwoman of Hyojeong World Peace Foundation. She has since taken a deep interest in the students and program, which has helped to strengthen it. She has spent time with the students, encouraging them in their studies. Prof. Moon points out that “only for a limited time will the young people have the opportunity to meet True Mother and participate in her activities in Korea. This is, therefore, a very precious opportunity for second- and third-generation Unificationists.”
The dormitory and GOP program was moved to HJ Cheonwon Complex at Cheongpyeong Lake in 2016. True Mother then changed the program name to Sunhak Institute of Korean Studies and is now under the direct care and love of True Mother.
Since its move from Seoul to the Cheongpyeong area, which is such a pure and good spiritual environment, staff has observed that youth are better able to concentrate on their studies and happily go to the nearby community sports center and to the Cheongpyeong Training Center to pray and just to walk around the beautiful environment of the HJ Cheonwon Complex.
Download the attached documents and send your applications to gopdorm1@gmail.com. Applications will be accepted until July 31, 2019.
If you are accepted into the program, you will receive a scholarship to assist with your tuition fees.
Feel free to contact the school staff via the above email address with any questions you may have.

My son would love to go to GOP. He is going to be in 10th grade next year. I want to know, that when coming back here in America after 10 months, if he would still be able too proceed into the 11th grade?

Dear Josephine Gimay. Thank you for your inquiry. GOP is a gap-year program where students learn Korean. essentially they miss a year of regular school. We suggest you connect with GOP staff directly via their contact info on the attachments and ask if other parents have asked the same question. Thank you
